The Dutch Wadden island Vlieland has 1099 inhabitants with an average waste production of 1371 kg per person. The fuel price on the island is € 1,53 per liter diesel and € 1,96 per liter gasoline. When it comes to waste treatment and disposal, waste is being separated into organics and remaining waste. After this process, the waste from the island is being transported to the main land by containers. This makes waste management more expensive and increases the dependency on the main land.
There are high costs associated with waste collection, separation, transportation to the main land which include diesel and energy costs too. Integration of the WER will eliminate the transportation costs as well as it will generate electricity which can be used or stored.
The payback time of the WER is in this scenario 2-4 years pending on subsidy and will result in less dependency on the land in terms of waste management and disposal.

Lower waste collection price, reduce emissions, less dependency on natural gas and diesel prices.
